About Us

The Brain Injury Association of New Mexico was founded in 1984 by individuals with brain injury, family members and concerned professionals, to help individuals with brain injury and the community learn about brain injury and resources to help cope with the effects of brain injury. The organization is comprised of a central office in Albuquerque. The office is staffed with two full time employees and one part time person. Volunteers meet regularly and are crucial to the success of the organization. 

Over the years the Brain Injury Association of New Mexico has provided a host of educational and advocacy services to the brain injury community in New Mexico. In addition to co-hosting an annual conference, the organization was instrumental in founding the Brain Injury Advisory Council, and also in providing grass roots support to ensure the passage of the New Mexico Brain Injury Services Fund and long term services to people with brain injury, "Mi Via".

Information & Resources

     The BIANM strives to provide accurate, up-to-date information and support to persons with brain injury, professionals, and family members seeking services.   We do so through our Albuquerque number at  292-7414 or our NM tollfree number at: 1-888-292-7415.

          We assist with the following services:

  • Information on basic aspects of brain injury 
  • provide education about services for people with brain injury in NM
  • connect to available services and resources
  • learn about supports for the person and their caregiver
  • keeping members aware of events and news in NM
  • host educational workshops
     

Advocacy & Public Policy

We provide support for progressive public policy for persons with brain injury on the national, state and local levels. Click here to see the Brain Injury Association of New Mexico long history of legislative advocacy. 

        The Brain Injury Association of NM accomplishes this goal through:

  • advocating for services and programs at the NM State Legislature
  • support ing Federal legislation recommended by BIA of America
  • representing the brain injury community at meetings of the NM Brain Injury Advisory Council and various meetings related to services and support to people with brain injury.
  • encouraging city and county governments to allocate resources to assist those with brain injury and other disabilities
  • distributing updates of recent public policy news from this website
     

Public Awareness & Prevention

The Brain Injury Association of New Mexico distributes public service announcements, posters, and other materials that educate the public regarding brain injury and its' consequences.  We provide trainings to various organizations such as schools, sports clubs, hospitals, civic clubs and support groups.  

Education

             The Brain Injury Association of New Mexico provides annual opportunities for educating  the community.  We provide educational opportunities on:

  • learning to deal effectively with
    • hospitals
    • New Mexico services for persons with brain injury
    • insurance companies
    • the legal system
    • social services
    • Social Security
  • get training & education on all aspects of brain injury (visit our lending library!)
  • educate the public on ways to prevent brain injury
    • use protective equipment in sports
    • recognize and treat minor brain injury
    • fasten seat belts
    • reduce risky behavior
